Milestone 6 Function Prototype 2

Main Changes

Categorization of searches:

Many artists mentioned needing to have painting categorizations as well as tags. However, we received mixed comments about the type of categorization. We have implemented this feature and planning to ask more about it in the upcoming user studies.

Specifying desired feedback type:

We added different text areas to guide the users to ask for certain type of feedback in addition to giving a general description about the painting. We decided to do this because many users were not sure what type of feedback to give on a piece of art.

Upvoting system for pieces of art:

Many users mentioned wanting to have an upvoting system in interArt. The upvoting system not only motivates them to upload more drawings, but also helps them understand the credibility of those who comment on their paintings based on the number of likes on their paintings.

More complex drawing tool (options such as color, size, and eraser):

Although users liked the idea of drawing directly on the paintings and some got really excited about it, a few of them mentioned the need for having a more complex tool for doing so. For example, one user mentioned the need for an eraser. Another user mentioned that the single color pen reminded her of redlining in drawing which is aimed to critique the paining and that she didn’t feel comfortable criticizing her peers work. She prefered to add to the paintings and give suggestions which is enabled by adding more colors.

Showing number of views:

Number of views of each painting is demonstrated. We think knowing that their pieces have been viewed several times could be motivating to artists since their aim is to have more audience for their pieces. We are planning to ask the opinion of users about this feature in the next round of user studies and realize if it has the same effect.

User profiles:

During the user studies many artists mentioned the need to see others’ portfolio and information about the peers. Moreover, we have observed that in art exhibitions all artists have business cards and don’t hesitate to give them to anyone visiting their pieces of art.

Progress and next steps

InterArt is now fully functional. We are planning to run a long term user studies with art students in which they use the website in a 4 day period to upload their photos of their ongoing drawing. Then, modify interArt and make it look nice!

Also, we are planning to ask the users to signup, edit their profile, and upload a drawing during the class pilot study.
